In general some applications should run in the public cloud, some applications in a private cloud at a third party cloud computing provider, and some applications should run on premise with hopefully access to the public and private cloud. This applies to any size of company. 

In general email, document storage, web conferencing, video calling, chat or text messaging, intranet and extranet portals, VoIP systems, backup systems should all run in a public cloud. The economics for this are pretty clear. Only compliance with federal regulations may force you to have those applications running on premise. Some legacy (old) applications will still need to run on premise computers.

Don't forget that you need to connect also to social media (LinkedIn, twitter, Facebook, Google, etc), and to numerous websites to do your business.
